Case Study: Ameren River Crossing

The Challenge
Ameren needed three 237-ft tubular structures that could cross the Mississippi River via two islands. These structures needed to be built in a high-wind velocity terrain that could face potentially damaging wind-induced vibrations (WIV).
The Solve
We constructed a static design to test loading criteria and used Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to dynamically analyze each beam’s resonant modal frequency against the wind frequency and member stiffness.

We also performed wind tunnel testing at The Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory at the University of Western Ontario.
The Result
The structure did not exhibit any signs of WIV, proving our iterative design process proactively mitigated harmful environmental effects.

In addition, this highly-engineered structure will serve as Ameren’s standard on all future river crossings and storm restorations.
